Here is the latest installment of my weekly newsletter:-
No – surely not! Peking Duck can prevent heart attacks and cancer mortality ?
01 July 2009 Newsletter Number 126 Kun-lo, the extrovert owner of the owner of our local Chinese restaurant told me about a year ago that it had just been proven that eating Peking Duck significantly reduced the risk of heart attacks and even had been shown to reduce cancer mortality rates. I wondered if he had drunk a little too much of his favourite rice wine but he was adamant about the remarkable 'facts' that had just been published. Although I was tired and ready for bed when I returned home from the meal I just couldn't sleep until I'd investigated his amazing claims. In the early hours I finally found the article I'd been looking for on the internet. It was a piece from the Daily Mail (10th June 2008). Here's what it said ….. ' The ingredient used to colour Peking duck can cut the risk of dying from heart disease by a third and cancer by two thirds, scientists say … Researchers looking at red yeast rice said that the benefits of the Chinese food colouring even seemed to outstrip those of statins – the much vaunted cholesterol lowering drugs' The researchers had just completed an extremely comprehensive five year combined study between two prestigious research institutions - Jefferson University Hospital, Pennsylvania and the Fuwai Hospital in Japan. I was well aware of the study but I had not expected it to report it's conclusions so soon and I really could never have imagined the very positive results achieved. In fact, I knew the subject of the trial was a red yeast rice but I had not associated that with the colouring that is used in Peking duck. So my friend Kun- Lo was half right - its the colourant rather than the duck itself that provides such huge health benefits. In total, the the scientists studied nearly 5000 people that had already suffered a heart attack. They found that red yeast rice extract was highly effective in combating high cholesterol and high blood pressure – much more effective than the standard statin based drugs prescribed so commonly for cardiovascular conditions. Also the red yeast rice extract showed no side effects – another thing that can not be claimed by statin based drugs. Here are the amazing findings from the study: Click here for Lowcol The risk of heart attack fell by 45%! One third of patients were less likely to need any form of heart surgery! Death rates from cardiovascular problems were cut by a third! Cancer mortality rates fell by 66%* *It should also be noted that there have also been other trials that suggest that red yeast rice extract could be important in preventing colon cancer. It's not often in a medical career that you get to see such astonishing results from a clinical trail. You may remember that I made a reference to these findings last autumn and mentioned that scientists around the world were working night and day trying to blend an effective formulated supplement that accurately reflects these wonderful results. I'm glad to say that scientist working in the field of natural products have now produced a potent daily supplement that is ready to go to market. The supplement is called Lowcol – and as the name suggests is designed to lower high levels of cholesterol quickly and safely whilst also helping to reduce levels of high blood pressure. Click now to read more By keeping your cholesterol and blood pressure in good healthy order you seriously reduce the risk of heart attack and cardiovascular problems such as angina and strokes. Lowcol has been sourced from the most purified red yeast extract with the same degree of purity as the red rice yeast used in the Jefferson/Fuwai study. Although I believe we need to do more research on the effects of red yeast in terms of cancer, I firmly believe that results in the study are accurate and therefore a daily intake of this powerful extract will definitely reduce the risk of cancer mortality … but as shown by the study it must be taken every day! So Lowcol is a much needed supplement for those who believe they run the risk of heart and cardiovascular disease and for all of us in terms of cancer. Next week I'll be looking at a garment that promises to change the lives of those who suffer with mild and severe forms of urinary incontinence. Make sure you click on for that. Stay healthy and keep smiling. Doctor Bruce |
